Top 5 Occupations for Veterans Entering the Civilian Workforce

Approximately 22 million men and women in the civilian non-institutional population ages 18 and over are veterans, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS). At any given time, thousands of veterans are preparing to enter the civilian workforce , many for the first time ever. While the transition can be daunting, choosing a career that closely matches up to your military experience can make your job search easier.

Of all the career opportunities available, the top five industries for veterans, according to the BLS, include: Production; Transportation and material-moving occupations; Installation; Maintenance and repair; and Protective service. Veterans are more likely than nonveterans to work in these industries because their military experience is a natural fit. In part, this reflects the fact that most veterans are men, and men are more likely than women to be employed in these occupations.

While these industries remain popular, some veterans may be more apt to choose a career based on salary and occupational outlook as well as jobs that factor in their military service. CNN Money and recently collaborated to rank the best occupations for veterans that factor in compensation, stability, job growth and the ease of transition from military to civilian work. Here are the top five:

  1. Operations or Intelligence Analyst
  2. Network Systems Manager
  3. Field Service Engineer
  4. Operations Manager, Logistics
  5. Senior Training/Training Manager
